OVERVIEW
The Maternal Health Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), in collaboration with Jhpiego, designed an easy-to-use job aid for practitioners providing antenatal care (ANC) services. Approved during the National Technical Consultation on Antenatal Care, the "ANC Wheel of Key Moments" translates clinical knowledge into active practice, helping frontline providers offer better, more timely care to pregnant women — even in low-resource settings.

Antenatal care is critical for the health and wellbeing of mothers and newborns. However, variability in the quality of ANC delivery — especially in remote areas — often leads to missed opportunities for early diagnosis, timely interventions, and risk management.
Existing job aids and protocols were often text-heavy, hard to navigate quickly, or misaligned with real-world field challenges and needs of the frontline healthcare workers. The ANC Wheel of Key Moments seeks to solve this gap through an intuitive, portable, and easy-to-use visual tool.

We began by identifying gaps and user needs in the existing material, followed by co-creating low-fidelity prototypes with ANMs, iterating over months through field testing in real-world conditions.

Multiple cardboard prototypes were developed and field-tested with ANMs. The content was vetted by clinicians to align with national ANC protocols, ensuring accuracy and usability.

Co-creation is not optional — it's essential. The best solutions came directly from the field: ANMs told us what worked, what didn’t, and how they wanted to use the tool.
Low-tech ≠ Low-impact. Even without screens or batteries, simple, tangible tools can radically shift how healthcare is delivered — especially in underserved areas.
Clarity makes you more organised. Breaking down the ANC journey into four “key moments” helped frontline workers remember and act on government guidelines at the right time.
Designing for trust builds adoption. ANMs embraced the wheel because it made their jobs easier, not harder. The EDD calculator especially made them feel confident and independent.
